Choosing the Right Compact Tractor Snow Removal Attachments: Winter Solutions for Every Need

Oct. 31 2023 Miscellaneous By Brandon Berg

Compact tractors can be a great tool for snow removal at home and on commercial properties. There are a variety of purpose-built attachment options to choose from, each with their own set of advantages and limitations. The choice you make will depend on your property type, budget, and even the type and volume of snow you receive.

We’ve put together some information below on the most common types of snow removal attachments and accessories, however the sales team here at Berg Equipment can work with you to help determine the best package for your specific needs.

  • Snow Pusher: Snow pushers are simple yet effective for snow removal. They are a very simple and cost-effective option if your tractor is equipped with a front-end loader with skid-steer quick connect. They are a wide blade-like attachment with boxed-in sides to trap the snow and to keep it contained as it is collected. Since they attach to the loader, you can lift and push piles up high and out of the way. Options like rubber or poly cutting edges can ensure that your driveway is not damaged when used.

  • Snow Plow: Snow plow blades are basic attachments that can be angled to either side to “windrow” the snow in a specific direction. These work very well for long driveways and pathways as the angle pushes snow sideways instead of building up in front of the blade. Plow blades can be attached to skid-steer quick couplers, or they can be attached to a special sub-frame that mounts on the tractor. They often can be optioned with manual or hydraulic tilt, with the latter offering more convenience and control.

  • Snow V-Plow: These are similar to snow plows, however they offer additional configurability. With separate hydraulically controlled left and right wings, they can form a V-shape, straight blade, or a scoop. They are the most versatile blade style, being effective in a variety of applications and snow types. However, they can be an expensive option, with many moving parts and hydraulic components. V-plows are mounted on a specific subframe and require hydraulic connections from the tractor. These are not as widely available, as they are typically used only in specific commercial applications like sidewalk clearing.

  • Snow Blower: Snow blowers are regarded as the most effective attachment for snow removal. They are ideal for clearing heavy snowfalls and their ability to “throw” the snow allows the operator to easily place it where they desire. They can be mounted on the rear of the tractor utilize the rear 3-point hitch and PTO for a more cost-effective option, however the tractor then has to be operated in reverse. Another option is a front-mounted snow blower, which is more convenient for the operator. However, these require a PTO driveline and subframe be added to the tractor and can be more costly than other options.

These are the most typical snow removal tractor attachments we sell, but this list is not completely comprehensive. There are some other niche attachments like rotary broom sweepers, rear blades, rear inverted snow blowers and even snow buckets that are used in certain applications. Often, a combination of these attachments may be best for your needs. It is important to discuss your specific needs and application with our sales team to determine your best options for snow removal.

Beyond the specific attachments, there are other accessories that can make snow removal more comfortable, safe, and efficient. We have a variety of OEM and aftermarket tractor cabs and heater kits to make winter tasks more comfortable. We also offer traction products, like snow chains, tire studs, weight kits, and even winter tires in some cases. Lighting should also be considered, so you can better see where you are working and warn others with rotating or flashing light assemblies.
